I volunteered because I felt an obligation to serve.
When it comes to income, it's not how much you make, it's how much you take home.
The last 14 months on active duty (circa 1984), I was able to save $1,000 a month, thanks in large part to being stationed in northern Maine (i.e. middle of nowhere) and having shed the financial black hole known as a wife.

You understand what I mean Charlie. It is not very lucrative until you put some time in. Until then you start because of that same obligation you speak of.
Then again it used to be the judge saying" Go to the Army or go to Jail."
