So, I almost have an original ready to record. Never thought I'd get this far and this may be the only one. I am not ready to become an audio engineer for one song, but I would like to put this in some sort of recorded format. Given these limitations, what would you recommend as something simple, easy to use and somewhat respectable for at home-studio (OK its the living room) use? thanks in advance for your advice and best wishes!

Buck, just a few questions to get started:

1. What's the most you are willing to spend on this one demo ?
2. How much does an hour of professional studio time in Memphis cost ?
3. Do you need overdubbing capability or will you be singing
while you play guitar ?
4. What kind of sound card do you have on your computer ?

Excellent focus for my wanderings. Until I get a better idea how I sound to myself I am reluctant to head into a studio format. Taht first privat effort might save everyone a world of aural pain. I do have some frinends who have put me in touch with some folks who can do some demo level recording when I am ready. The studio time is rumored to be available (especially at off-hours like Sunday at 8:00AM) but they pretty much demand that you bring your own producer/engineer and that needs to be someone known to them -- not amateur hour on the boards.
I will want to overdub though I would prefer to do at least two tracks from the start vocal and guitar. I do not have computer based recording stuff of my own -- decades ago I did the reel-to-reel version, but I see (though don't understand) that there is lots of nifty digital stuff out there -- but where to begin?
The question about cost is a crap shoot. I never thought I would have this much wrapped up in gear -- so, vague as it is, I'll probably follow where the sound leads. If the first experience doesn't embarass me too much, I'll start building on that. I am not concerned about "the one best answer to everything" but it will need to be on my own to begin with. Are any of the digital recorders like the Tascam crop worth the postage; they seem to get good reviews mostly?

Maybe this guides your answers; it sure made me start thinking more seriously about what and when as opposed to maybe,if.

Thanks for responding!

Here's a $200 package that gets decent reviews.  I'm not a recording guru, but it's a start without crushing the wallet.

A Mac, garage band (included with mac) and a decent mic (even a M-Audio producer USB) will suffice for some decent demos.
Sure if you dont have a mac it is some initial cost however it gets you away from the microsoft devil and it can be used for anything your heart desires aside from recording. If you dont already have a good laptop checkout craigslist, you can find great buys on there. Or an Imac again craigslist is a great resource. If I had nothing this is the direction I would go in the beginning instead of wasting time and money and learning the hard way. then if you ever decide to step it up a bit you can invest in Pro Tools or Cubase, a fast track ultra (or something similar) and some more good mics.
I hope this helps a little with direction.

From what I've heard lately, there isn't much of that on the radio.
