A lyric I just finished up last night after a few shots of irish whiskey.  Kind of an apocalyptic take on the city I live in.  Sound wise, think of a Neil Young & Crazy Horse jammy kind a thing.  I have the chords for the verses and they're really simple.  goes Dm C Am G -- still hashing out the chorus and the bridge.

Detroit Is Sneezing
By Aaron Cain
©2009

[Verse 1]
It was the 1920's the last time this town was grand
A gateway to the assembly line promised land
These dirty streets littered with broke down cars
Like long dead busted dreams worn now like battle scars

[Verse 2]
The city's list keeps growin' of homes to be bulldozed
The crime keeps risin' and there's no relief for the foreclosed
They're puttin' boards on windows and sealin' up doors
Leavin us all wonderin' what we're staying here for

[Chorus]
And now it seems to me
Like it was a prophecy
My mother's words when I was eleven years old
She said: when Detroit sneezes Toledo catches the cold

[Verse 3]
Like nails in a coffin with every credit card swipe
Leaves us collectin' food stamps and crack pipes
A city full of empty houses filled with trash and broken toys
Gangs fill the streets pretendin' to be men when they're just boys

[Chorus]
And now it seems to me
Like it was a prophecy
My mother's words when I was eleven years old
She said: when Detroit sneezes Toledo catches the cold

[Bridge]
Nobody wants to bail us out, it's a sign of the times
They'll let us all go down then b*tch about welfare lines

[Chorus 3X]
And now it seems to me
Like it was a prophecy
My mother's words when I was eleven years old
She said: when Detroit sneezes Toledo catches the cold

I don't know if this matters based on the lack of responses thus far but I have a scratch recording my buddy and I made of this one.  It's an acoustic take on this song and it certainly has it's faults but this was our first take on this tune.  Finished product will be all electric with some nice fuzzy distortion and will be loud ass sh*t.  It's not as mellow a song as it comes off here.

Download here if you'd like: http://www.mediafire.com/?4mnbk2dnyyt

Aaron,

True to your darker style, you have penned out what I would consider blues based type of song.

I can not down load it at this time but the lyrics roll out quite effectively from past reflections of a lively, bustling city to a present day look at what has become of it in an economic crunch for the area.  The Chorus is also reflective wisdom that everyone experiences later in life and how the truth of a simple phrase or saying can become so clear.  The third verse seems to address how the people are trying to live by the "Law of the Jungle" type mentality to ensure there survival from a very young age.

All of these combine to make me think of a Delta type blues.  Something from life experiences set to music and meant to leave a vision in your mind of the suffering people go through in certain areas while it seems others may forget about them because of the "It hasn't happened to me Syndrome."

I feel you have done a great job in painting the picture of your corner of the world in a lyrical format.  I will try and download it later and see if I can get back with you.

I like it Aaron. I want to hear your acoustic version. This is probably going to be a dumb question but how do I locate the song on mediafire and do I have to be a member to download it.

Just got my first.......and second listen. Awesome job Aaron! I think it sounds perfect acoustic. Obviously a full band version would be nice but it should add to what you got not take away. Who's on vocals? Nice job whom ever it is.

Hi Aaron.  I opened this thread once before but just read the top paragraph (your info before the lyrics) - and never read the lyrics till just now.  I wanted to read all the posts and every time it seemed I logged in for more than a minute or two, I got pulled away by something.

I posted one something like it pretty recently - about a town going down hill.

Your song has some thoughtful lyrics in it.  I like the way it's really descriptive - and almost wish you used personification more.  Like - instead of saying that the broke down cars were 'like' scars, actually talk about the city like it's a castout hobo or something... with those cars being it's 'scars'...  I don't know... but something about the description made me want to hear the town as a destitute 'person' instead of a 'thing'.

I'll give a listen to the tune when I have a little more time...but I wanted to let you know I read it and liked it.
