So a buddy of mine gave me a Les Paul copy since he never played it. It has some really cheap pickups in it and I'm looking to upgrade them soon. Here's the problem, I play a Fender Telecaster and a Peavey Strat style guitar, I haven't the slightest clue about Humbucker style pups. I asked a guy in a local band which he preferred but he never really gave a straight answer. I mostly play country, a little rock, and a lot of blues. So is the Soapbars, Alnico, or EMG's a better pick for those styles of music?

Tough question. Ask ten guitarists and get ten different answers. My suggestion is to spend a little time listening to LP players you like and search the net to figure out what they are using. For blues/rock nearly any quality PU will work, with tones as different as colors of a rainbow. Seymore Duncan has a pretty good site with sound clips to get some ideas and narrow the field a little. Impressions from my own guitars: Vintage Gibson 55 LP soapbar/P90 - Excellent clean tones and good balance. Great for blues on the edge. With lots of gain it sounds a little forward and snotty. (single coil so it will hum in lousy rooms). One of my tone faves. Vintage Gibson 68 HB - Really good vintage rock/blues tone (you know this sound). Does not clean up as well as P90 but better sustain, more grit. Seymore Duncan -59 - Very close to Gibson 68. Classic rock/blues tone. I like it a lot. Seymore Duncan Jazz - Very clean, warm tones, lots of headroom. I use this in the neck position of a 335. Seymore Duncan JB - A more modern sound with lots of articulation and good sustain. Great with a high gain amp. Best at the bridge position. I hope this is useful to you. Without your ears or your fingers it is hard to suggest a best choice. Good luck in your search.
