I'm looking for my next guitar, and I have been analyzing all brands, and the PRS Angelus is my hands down favorite, but way out of my price range - but it is an INCREDIBLE Instrument.

Anyways, at one point I narrowed my choices down to Martin DC-1E, DC-160GTE, and OMC-16RGTE vs Taylor 314CE, 310CE, 414CE, and 410CE. Now I'm down to Martin's DC-160GTE, and Taylor's 314CE. Why? both have 1-3/4" nuts, the 1-11/16" is too narrow for my fat fingers, and I get dead strings. Both guitars sound great, and compliment each other perfectly, with me play one, and a friend playing the other. The Martin has a Darker tone (which I love), where the Taylor is Bright & Crystal Clear, and has a laser beam projection.

Now for my question, Ideally, I would love to buy both, but reality says I can only afford one. I record a lot more than I play on stage, with that in mind, which one records best in your opinion and why?

Well I've owned a Taylor 410-CE, it was a really great guitar. However I didn't like the sound of it recorded, to me it was way to "bassy" sounding. I wound up recording on the studios Martin DCX1E, it had a more Mid- Highs sound which is what I was looking for. I like that guitar so much I bought a DCX1E and then saved up to buy a DX1R. These are 2 cheaper Martins, but they sound amazing. These are my experiences and opinions, so the best I can give you is to try them out and see which feels, and sounds the best for you. Hope this helps in someway.

Personal favorite? Martin D-28. I know it is not one of your key choices but the reason might prove helpful: When I play it I hear MY tones in there. Not so with the Taylor guitars I have played. Taylor makes wonderful guitars but I don't hear MY tones. So trust your ears. Stay true to your own sound. Which guitar brings out YOUR sound the best. Pick out the guitar that speaks to you. Then all you will need is a skilled engineer with good mic technique to record excellent acoustic guitar tracks.

I prefer the Martin. I've owned both but really like the sound of the Martin guitar. I presently play a DC16RE Aura which I find has a great sound live or on a recording. Both guitars have good quality workmanship, but I prefer the martin for it's rich tone and also the fact that I can change the sound by using the aura system.

Craig, you need to step up your game.

You should be evaluating:
Martin:   DC-Aura's, D-28's, CEO-4R's, and 000-28's.
Taylor: 814CE 
Don't forget to consider: Larrivee or Bourgeois.
You might even include a Gibson J-45R or Southern Jumbo in your search.

Any of these models will sound significantly better than the two or three
lower-end models you are comparing currently.

Yes, they are more expensive, but the quality versus value sweet spot
for acoustic-electric guitars is between $2K and $4K.

Furthermore, you should then compare these models with the PRS Angelus ($4.8K)
you thought so highly of.  You'll find the models I have mentioned above
sound just as good if not better and are far more reasonably priced.

After evaluating these models, if you find that
the PRS Angelus is still your hands-down favorite, just bite the bullet and buy it.
Take it from old fart who waited way too many years
to buy what he really wanted, you won't regret it.  

Just don't forget the PAWS rule and trust your ears.

The Paws Rule definitely, I think you have already tipped the scales and are looking for validation.

The PRS is obviously what you want, but can't afford. You stated that you like the tone of the Martin over the Taylor.

The bear is right, either bite the bullet and get the PRS or stay with the Martin and look a little higher up the scale.

I think you will find with all guitarists that they all started off wanting a certain guitar and settled for something else. They all end up with the #1 desired guitar, eventually. and are never satisfied until they get it.

With me it was a Taylor presentation. :-)

Speaking of the range of Mrtin's and Gibsons that CR cites above, my experience has been there is as much variation from one instance of a model to another, not just model to model. That said, Martins and Gibsons I cannot discriminate and I am forunate to have one of each; they are different (like the kids) and each is wonderful and worth every penny I spent, no regrets. (And even the wife can tell the difference in the tone.) On the other hand I have a small closet well-stocked with instruments I thought I could afford at the time. The sum of these parts exceeds the whole of the Martin or Gibson costs (each, not together!).

I prefer the sounds from the Gibson and Epiphone lines.  Although I have not been able to get exactly what I have wanted, the Epiphone models have really made me reconsider going full blown for the Gibson.  The Epiphone AJ-500RE has proven to be great playing it here in Afghanistan.  I have not had the opportunity to try all of the features due to the lack of resources here.

I have a Taylor 414MACE.

It is absolutely the most impressive guitar I have ever picked up and am SO glad that I bit the bullet.

I am kind of like the others, get what you want now, or you will pay more in your search for what you already know you want.
