Shure PG81 Condenser Microphone

This is a great little microphone in the Performance Gear line of Shure microphones.  It has a relatively flat frequency response, with a small increase of about +2dB around 3kHz through 10kHz.  It excels at recording acoustic instruments, including Acoustic Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin, and some percussion.  It is very well constructed and handles the usual studio abuse (connecting/disconnecting, in a mic clip/out of a mic clip).  On/Off switch also seems sturdy enough.  Requires Phantom Power.

I can't say enough good things about this mic.  My acoustic guitar sounds "alive" when recorded with this guy...very clear and responsive.  I have used this mic on acoustic guitars and pianos and have been very pleased with the recorded results.  I own 2 of them.

MSRP:  $180, Sells for:  $130.

Dougie, do you have any experience with MXL condenser microphones?
BTW, if your PA doesn't have 48V of phantom power, what is your
recommendation for a phantom power box? Thanks.

I have an MXR V63M condenser mic.  It's nice.  I like it a lot for male vocals.

If you don't have phantom power in your rig, I would recommend a mic pre-amp.  If you're looking for live gigs, check out the ART TubeMP.  It's only about $40 and will give you phantom power.  If you're looking for studio use, there are tons of rack mount mic pre-amps to chose from.
